Must Watch TV: Old & New…

I’ve decided to share some TV shows with you that keep the grump and I entertained of an evening. I think the whole sharing television thing is working well for us as we like a lot of the same stuff. There are things that we watch separately, like Formula 1 and the soaps (the grump just can’t get enough of them 😉) but overall we do watch a lot of stuff together.

So, if you’re looking for something to watch with your grump, here’s a few suggestions…

Orange Is The New Black (OITNB):

If you haven’t already, you NEED to watch this! It’s based on the real experiences of Piper Kerman, a women in her thirties who ended up in prison due to an incident with her girlfriend. OITNB follows the life of Piper (although, in this her surname is Chapman) through her fifteen month sentence inside.

The first two series of this are really, really good but we felt the third series was lacking something. We’ve just finished watching the fourth season and although it was good and better than the third one, I have to say, it didn’t keep us gripped like the first two did.

OITNB is a Netflix baby, so if you have it, give it a go. Although, I will warn’s definitely one that I guarantee you will binge watch (well, the first two seasons anyway!)

Modern Family:

This is on it’s eighth season and it’s still just as funny now as it was in the first episode.  This show is from the writer of the hit American sitcom, Fraiser (which is another of our favourites that you’ll hear more about later! 😉). It’s based on the lives of three very different but related families that find themselves in some of the most hilarious of situations.

This is a light hearted, easy to watch show that is the perfect pick me up if you just want a giggle. Season eight has just finished so it’s now a box set job if you want to watch it. Although, you may find the odd episode on Sky One too! 👍

Arrested Development:

Now this show is again a Netflix exclusive (although you can buy the box set now too) and I have to say, it’s a hoot! It’s again one of those light hearted comedies that will cheer you up whatever the weather; this is mainly due to the fact it makes you realise that there’s always someone worse off than you.

It follows the musings of the Bluth family as their most sensible son Micheal (played by Jason Bateman) does his best to head up the family after their father is imprisoned. It’s really well written and has some great characters (Buster is one of my particular favourites).

If your Sky planner is looking a little sorry for itself and you just can’t seem to find anything to watch (even though you have over 500 channels), then Fraiser is the way to go. This classic American comedy is superbly written and with eleven seasons, it’s guaranteed to make you giggle.

In case you have never seen or even heard of it, the show was created as a spin-off of the hit tv show, Cheers. It’s all about the life of Dr Fraiser Crane, a Psychiatrist who moves back home to Seattle to live in his new ‘bachelor life’. However, things don’t go quite to plan when his father (and Eddie the dog) end up moving in with him. It’s honestly very funny and again, one of those programs that makes you feel good about your own life when you see the mishaps in the lives of these characters.

Now, I’ve definitely saved the best until last with this one because this show is flipping awesome. If you haven’t watched it yet…DO IT!

So far, there are three seasons and a one off special (The Abominable Bride). Each season consists of three episodes, which at an hour and a half each, are practically like watching full length films.  It’s from the BBC and written by the amazingly talented Steven Moffat (Dr Who, The Adventures of Tintin) and Mark Gatiss (Dr Who, The League of Gentlemen).

This modern uptake of the very well known classic Sherlock Holmes is gripping, funny and tells the most amazing stories. The VERY clever writing mixed with the brilliant performances from Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) and Martin Freeman (Dr John Watson) make for an outstanding performance and I cannot wait for series four! Roll on 2017….

We were exactly the same with the first two seasons but for some reason 3 & 4 just didn’t grip us in the same way. Although, I have to say that the last few episodes of season 4 did start to grip us again! Xx
