Chester & Hickories with the grump…

Last week the grump and I decided to have a few days off work. We felt that as we hadn’t had any time off since Christmas we deserved a break; some time to just chill out and do very little.

On our first day off we went to Chester to have a mooch around the shops and a bite to eat. The grump ended up buying a new suit (which he describes as being so tight, he can’t even afford to fart in it!😂) – Charming hey! We have three weddings in the space of a week this summer, so I’ve been moidering him to get one for a while now and how very handsome he looks in it too☺️.

For food, we decided to eat at Hickories , we love this place but don’t really go that often so decided it would be a nice treat. We booked before hand because we know how busy it can get (it was 1:30 on a Thursday afternoon and was super busy). The grump wasn’t going to have a drink but then he saw they had ‘Blue Moon’ on offer and was soon asking me if I would mind driving home…

When you get to the table, you get a bottle of water and some popcorn to snack on whilst you browse the menu (which I think is a great little perk) I also love the little quirks this place has; the kitchen roll holder which is on your table instead of serviettes for example.

To be fair, we didn’t have to wait long for our food. The grump opted for BBQ Pulled Pork, topped with BBQ pit beans (whatever they are). It came on a wooden board served in a rustic, brushed steel camping tin thing, with fries served in a mug.

I’m sure the guys at @WeWantPlates would have something to say about this. To be honest, it looked like some sort of ration tin to me! Anyway, the grump said it was “good” and he soon shoveled it down.

I chose to have the sizzling chicken Fajitas, which again came on a wooden board, with the chicken served in a cast iron skillet on top of fried peppers and onions. Also, on the board was a selection of dips including, guacamole, tomato salsa and sour cream. As well as some lettuce and some cheddar cheese.

Overall, I thought the fajitas were tasty and you get more than enough stuff to fill the tortilla wraps with. You do only get four tortilla’s though, which meant there was a lot of food left over (probably too much).

We didn’t have anything from the dessert menu so I can’t comment on this. Instead we decided to have a Cheshire Farm ice cream by Chester river, I had Honeycomb and the grump went for Rum and Raisin and you know what…they were bloody delicious! ☺️😍

I used to love Hickory’s (in the days when I ate meat, haven’t been since going veggie), still looks as good as ever. You can’t beat an ice cream by the river!
